Midnight — Dark Mode & Reader · Effective July 19, 2026

๐ŸŒ™ The short version: Midnight collects no data at all. It restyles pages entirely on your device, never reads or transmits what you browse, and has no accounts, no analytics and no trackers.

1. Who we are

Midnight ("the extension") is a browser extension for Google Chrome that applies a dark color theme to websites — per site or everywhere — and offers a distraction-free reading mode for articles. This policy explains what information the extension does — and, more importantly, does not — handle.

2. What data we collect

None. The extension does not collect, transmit, store remotely, sell or share any personal information or browsing data. Specifically, we do not collect:

  • The content of pages you visit — dark mode and reading mode work by restyling the page locally in your browser; nothing on the page is read out, recorded or sent anywhere
  • Your browsing history or the addresses of sites you visit
  • Personal details such as your name, email address or identifiers
  • Usage analytics, telemetry or crash reports
  • Cookies or advertising data

The extension has no server. There is nowhere for your data to be sent.

3. What is stored on your device

The extension stores only your own settings:

  • Your dark-mode preferences — the global on/off switch, your "This site / Everywhere" scope choice, and the list of sites where you turned dark mode on or off. These are kept in Chrome’s extension storage (chrome.storage.sync). If you have Chrome sync enabled, Chrome itself syncs these settings across your devices as part of your Google profile — the developer never sees them.
  • A small per-site flag in each site’s local storage that remembers whether dark mode was on, so pages can turn dark instantly without a white flash while loading.

Uninstalling the extension removes its settings. Reading mode keeps nothing at all — it exists only while it is open on a tab.

4. Why the extension requests its permissions

PermissionWhy it is needed
Access to websites
(host permissions)
Required to apply the dark theme’s CSS and to build the reader view on whichever website you choose to darken or read. The extension only restyles pages on your screen — it does not read, collect or transmit their content.
activeTabLets the popup see the address of the tab you are on when you open it, so the toggle applies to that site. The address is used at that moment only and never recorded.
storageSaves your dark-mode preferences (described in section 3) so they persist between browsing sessions.
Keyboard shortcuts
(commands)
Provides the optional Alt+D (dark mode) and Alt+R (reading mode) shortcuts.

5. Third-party services

The extension uses no third-party services, analytics providers, advertising networks or remote APIs. All of its code is bundled inside the extension and runs entirely on your device.

6. Children’s privacy

Because the extension collects no data from anyone, it collects no data from children.

7. Changes to this policy

If a future version of the extension ever changes how data is handled, this policy will be updated and the "Effective" date above revised before that version is released. Material changes will be noted in the extension’s store listing changelog.
